The Safed branch is run by Meir Panim in close cooperation with the Safed municipality’s welfare department. Branch manager Benny Elgad and his staff of volunteers, some of whom are themselves Holocaust survivors, greet the lonely, elderly, or disadvantaged visitors who come to enjoy a hot meal at the branch every day.
Benny makes sure to make the visitors’ stay varied and interesting. Economics workshops, parties and events and all sorts of little surprises are a matter of rote at Meir Panim’s Safed branch.
Benny and the volunteers do everything in their power to bring smiles to the diners’ faces and to provide them with a warm corner to which they know that they can always come.
The building also hosts other activities such as a “Pathways to Parenting” series for parents struggling with communication difficulties with their children, courses and workshops on managing family finances run by Paamonim, winter supplies distribution, and more. In addition, the site serves as a distribution center for holiday food packages or food distribution in times of emergency, as necessary. And every year, a public Passover Seder is conducted for the benefit of those who otherwise have nowhere to go, allowing them to feel the joy of the holiday just like everyone else.
